The Twin River GuardAbout Us |
|
|
We are local reenactors from Geraldton, Western Australia, who have an interest in re-creating, experiencing and living history. We predominantly
focus in the European historical era from the beginning of the Viking Migration Period (the first recorded Viking raid in
England at Lindisfarne in 793AD), through the so called Dark Ages to the end of the Medieval period (commonly accepted as 1600AD).
The Twin River Guard is open to, and welcoming of, anyone who is interested in researching history and living it! Eventually it is hoped that
our website and forum will become a mecca for history enthusiasts, for both history students and teachers for research, and for the organisation
of events.

Esa inghean Aodhán(Shelly Richardson)Esa inghean Aodhán is from an ancient line of swordsmen and women who protected the South from the ravaging hordes. Sent North to learn the ways of lawful civilization, she served the ruling Thane as the Keeper of the Purse and eventually, his Keeper of Records and High Scholar. But as time passed, the Thane departed his throne, and Esa stood forth to defend the Twin River Guard. She now takes up the mantle of Thane, gathering the folk of the Twin River Guard to arms and arrows and encouraging the Guilds to flourish amongst the populace. Shelley Richardson has been re-enacting since 1998, joining the active SCA group in Perth, Western Australia. She began as a fledgling rapier fighter and eventually became (at the time) the only female White Scarf of Lochac. (Google is your friend). Arts and Sciences and archery were also of interest, and for a couple of years, a heavy combatant in the SCA rattan combat style. As a teacher, she was moved to Geraldton and was a part of the fledgling TRG when it first formed in January 2010.Email: esa@geraldtonhistory.org.au Sénéchal
Einar ap Dafydd(Karl Edwards)Hailing from a land to the far North and imbued by the saga's of warriors, Einar went a wandering through many lands before finding a small group of similarly minded warriors and there settled in a place where new saga's were waiting to be written. Over time Einar became a valued member of the group and advisor to the Esa inghean Aodhán, Thane of the Twin River Guard. Although I have only been involved in reenactment since July 2010, I have always had a keen interest in the Medieval period. My wife Sigyn and I were married in 2002 in a Medieval Handfasting ceremony where we had an Honour Guard of two New Varangian Guards. I have been collecting original Medieval arms and armour for 5 years and have quite a nice little museum of authentic pieces. I am interested in reenacting all aspects of Medieval times and particularly like the combat and archery aspects. I have also turned my hand to sewing, leather work and metal work by way of armour modifications on reenactment armour pieces.Email: einar@geraldtonhistory.org.au Mobile: 0417 952 916 High Marshal
Olaf Blóðøx (Bloodaxe)(Mark McAuliffe)Olaf was a member of the Varangian Guard of Dyrrachium and was well known for his proficiency with the two handed axe as well as the large shield and broadsword. With the disbanding of the guard Olaf settled down to a quieter family life but with the forming of a new guard the Call to Arms has gone out and Olaf has once more taken up his axe. My first taste of re-enactment was watching The Grey Company perform at the Hampton Arms during one of Geraldton’s Festivals and a couple of years later, once again at the Hampton Arms watching The Grey Company perform some friends and I met Rodney Southall who had been a member of the New Varangian Guard in Port Hedland and was now residing in Geraldton. This fortuitous meeting led to the founding of the New Varangian Guard Dyrrachium Garrison here in Geraldton in 1993 and the group continued through until 2003 re-enacting the times and peoples of the Byzantine Empire and the Emperor’s personal guard, the Varangians. While I chose the name Olaf for my guardsman character it was my fellow guards who gave me the name BloodAxe, both praising me and cursing me for my proficiency with and liking of the two handed axe for which the Varangians were known. When the Twin River Guard was first forming I was approached to see if I was interested in joining up or if I had any equipment that I would be willing to sell or donate to the club. Initially I was a little uncertain about picking up the hobby again but after attending a training session and meeting some of the members I found myself pulling out and cleaning up my old gear the next day – there’s just something about picking up a sword! Then somehow I ended up on the High Council...........Email: olaf@geraldtonhistory.org.au High Scholar
Sigyn in ljósa(Kerstine Edwards)Stories abound that Sigyn in ljosa’s lineage harkens back to a legendary place known as the Hall of Thanes. There, the great Thane Jan resided and in time his descendants became known as Jansson. Daring the unknown, the descendants of Thane Jan travelled far and wide settling amongst the tribes encountered during their travels. The hardiest of these travellers eventually found themselves in a great southern land, a land that their ancestors now call home. Lady Sigyn was honoured to take her place on the High Council of the Twin River Guard as High Scholar, where she assists her people in learning new skills and remembering the skills of old lest they be forgotten. She turns her hand to the creative arts of beading, sewing and the culinary delights. She partakes in the warriors skills so as to better serve her Thane in the protection of their realm.Email: sigyn@geraldtonhistory.org.au Past Thane's
